The pioneering tunnel is a tunnel that can be passed by hikers. The tunnel is located in the course of the Pionierweg, a hiking path that was also called Magdeburger Stieg in the past, above the Selketal between Alexisbad and Mägdesprung. The pioneer cliff is not far from the tunnel. The pioneer tunnel was cut through the rock from May 14 to 19, 1900 as part of an exercise by the 2nd company of the Magdeburg Pioneer Battalion No. 4. The tunnel was partly excavated in a mining manner.

You can take the Pioniersweg from the Köthener Hütte to Alexisbad. This path is recommended because it is very beautiful and always "forcing" to stop. Protruding rocks and again and again the view of the valley, and if you're lucky you can hear and see the narrow-gauge railway "put you in" other worlds. "The peace was very relaxing.
