The renaissance castle has an eventful past. The castle has Slavic origins and was temporarily used as the seat of the Schwerin bishops, as a university and as a criminal college. In the GDR era, the house of culture, a library and a museum were housed here.

After a long vacancy, the castle, now privately owned, was extensively renovated beginning in 2010.

The tornado on May 5, 2015, which devastated parts of the city, caused only minor damage to the castle.
