Beautiful town on the Elbe with a castle.

After the fall of Henry the Lion, the Guelphs lost control of the Artlenburg Elbe crossing and Bardowick's trade routes towards the end of the 12th century. Bleckede was therefore founded in 1209[2] as a town by Duke William of Brunswick and Lüneburg as a new trading centre under the name Löwenstadt / Lowenstat on the Elbe. The name chosen in memory of Henry the Lion did not prevail. The place name Bleckede is probably derived from the Old Germanic "Blek-ithi", blek and -ithi mean bright, free, light place, and originated from the earlier German and Wendish settlement Bleketsa and slavicum Bleckede.

Bleckede is a town on the German Half-Timbered House Route. The town is now dominated by its information center in Bleckede Castle. Two themes characterize the information center: an old building and life on the river: Bleckede Castle is the adventure center of the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve. Over 1000 square meters of modern exhibition space make one of the most interesting and pristine landscapes in Central Europe tangible and experienceable. Bird song piano, flood model, aquarium, observation tower, life-size animals and much more can be discovered and tried out here - for young and old.
There is also the tourist information, room booking and a shop with regional products from Bleckede and the surrounding area and original souvenirs.
