When, after 1900, the Rennsteigbahn was planned from Ilmenau to Schleusingen, the spa drivers insisted on a station near their facilities. Since the route should be passed by the district anyway, they confessed to their station. For the construction of the station, however, first had to be removed about 15 meters high Schlackehalde the Sophienhütte (a glassworks founded in 1855). There, the station was built, which went in 1904 together with the Rennsteigbahn in operation (Wikipedia).
