The beautiful St. John's Church can be seen from afar. Construction began in 1220 and ended between 1440 and 1466. This three-aisled hall church is a late Gothic building made entirely of brick, with some of the stone formats being different.
The original, carved main altar is considered one of the key works of sculpture and painting in the Altmark region at that time. The precious furnishings of the twelve medieval windows in the choir and the two northern nave windows from the mid-15th century, as well as the sandstone pulpit with its many details and the baroque organ from 1747 are also worth seeing.

St. John's Church still bears witness to the Hanseatic city's former wealth. Around 1160, Margrave Albert the Bear founded the first Knights Hospitaller Commandery in northern Germany in the fertile lowlands of the Altmark Wische. A commandery was a form of fiduciary transfer of church benefices to third parties while at the same time exempting the town from official church duties. Werben was granted town rights as early as 1225, became an imperial city in the 13th century and was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1358. The lively indulgence trade made the construction of the mighty brick church possible.
