The monastery was dissolved in the course of secularization in 1803, the place came to Bavaria through the main deputation of the Reichsputation in 1803, like large parts of Franconia, too (see also History of Franconia). [4] Ebrach Abbey was officially granted imperial directness only when it was abolished. Before 1803, this had always been successfully contested by the Würzburg Hochstift. Since then, the monastery church has been the Catholic parish church of the Assumption. Since 1851, the baroque monastery buildings have served as a prison (today the Ebrach correctional facility).
