After the city mills on the Mühlengraben were destroyed in a fire in 1882, the mill deputation decided in 1896 to use the moat's hydropower to generate electricity so that a tram could be powered. The weir and the quay walls were also rebuilt with the power plant. The plant went into operation on April 27, 1903 and supplied the new tram and 138 house connections with around 800,000 kWh of direct current. At the beginning of the 1960s, when large power plants were built in the area, the electrical power plant ceased to operate.
