Basalt was mined in the Dietesheim quarries until 1982. In the period that followed, the entire area was renatured, for example by planting over 120,000 oaks and alders as well as bushes and shrubs. Over the years, a magnificent forest landscape with bizarre rock faces and deep blue lakes has developed there, which is not only attractive for walkers and cyclists, but as a nature reserve also offers a refuge for numerous rare animal and plant species.
The "An der Bruch border" viewing platform on the south-eastern shore offers a magnificent view of the steep rock faces of the Oberwaldsee.
