Dietesheimer Quarries local recreation area

The former basalt quarries, now an attractive local recreation area, are a popular excursion destination in Dietesheim.

After basalt mining ended in 1982, an impressive lake landscape of more than 61 hectares was created here, including around 22.5 hectares of deep blue water. In addition to the largest lakes, the Vogelsberger See and the Oberwaldsee, the attractive landscape is complemented by a number of smaller lakes. High steep walls can be admired as bizarre rock formations that are unique in the Rhine-Main region.

For recultivation, around 120,000 trees, mostly oak and alder, as well as almost 7,000 bushes have been planted at Vogelsberger See and Oberwaldsee. Plants and animals that have become rare have found a new habitat here. A portion of the lake landscape around the Oberwaldsee is now protected.

Easily accessible paths lead visitors to beautiful viewing points, the highlight of which is the so-called canyon bridge. There are extensive bridle paths around the recreation area.

During the warm season, Mühlheim clubs invite you to colorful celebrations and celebrations in the clubhouses on the edge of the quarries.
