The double gate, built in 1393, is an impressive relic of the medieval city fortifications, which, apart from the upper areas that were reconstructed after the Second World War, still retains the old structure.

Two round towers, the so-called owl towers, flank the first gate opening on the field side. A bridge-like driveway leads to the three-story main gate. The bridge used to lead over the city moat.

The Klever Gate is a double gate built in 1393 in Xanten on the Lower Rhine.

Klever Tor, owl towers of the outer gate

      Inner gate on Klever Street

It was part of the medieval city fortifications, large parts of which were later demolished for cost reasons. After the “Marstor” and the “Scharntor” were demolished in 1821 and the “Scharntor” in 1825, the Xanten city council rejected the demolition of the Klever Tor in 1843. At that time it was used as a holding house.

The Klever Tor consists of two gates that are connected to each other via a bridge. This bridge used to lead over a city moat in a ring around Xanten city center, which today serves as a city park. The inner gate consists of a single square tower, in which three rentable apartments are now offered as holiday homes. The outer gate is formed by two round towers, the so-called “owl towers”, and an arch. In 1843 the gate was in a miserable condition, so Franz Langenberg was commissioned to restore it. The roof of the owl towers was completely missing, the masonry was damaged in some places, and the arch above the passage was in danger of collapsing. For this reason, walls within the gate, which had been added subsequently to use the gate as a detention center and were now putting too much strain on the foundation, were demolished and the gate was completely renovated. After the Second World War, the upper floors of the gate had to be reconstructed, but the original substructure from 1393 still remains.
