The mountain chapel stands in the middle of the Schöppinger Berg, in an open location and visible from all sides. The quarry stone masonry with an octagonal floor plan, crowned by a bell-shaped roof, was probably inaugurated in 1718 on the occasion of a corridor procession and is one of four chapels on the old processional route.

In pre-Christian times it was customary to walk along the field boundaries after winter. The earliest Christian processions in the fields followed on from this custom. There has been evidence of a procession in the fields in Schöppingen since 1662, which is also called the "Hail Celebration" and is intended to ask for the protection of the harvest from storm damage. The destination of the procession, followed by a mass, is the mountain chapel.
