It is not entirely clear when exactly the castle was built. The first mentions of a settlement can be found before the year 1000. In any case, the complex was the headquarters of the Wettins, from whom several rulers of well-known German territories and margraviates as well as other European states descended.
Today there is a high school for art in the Höhenburg. The view from above is definitely wonderful and you can treat yourself to a cake in the castle café.

Yes, it could be so nice if you could just take a look into the castle complex. It would be a magnet.
But so the beautiful Wettin continues to win its Sleeping Beauty sleep.
Nevertheless, you can go on wonderful tours here. 👌

Wettin Castle, also known as Wettin Castle, is a heavily overbuilt hilltop castle in the town of Wettin in the Saale district in Saxony-Anhalt. It is the ancestral home of the Margraves, Electors and Kings of Saxony, the Wettins.
In 1991, the Burg-Gymnasium Wettin was set up on the castle grounds, which is unique in Central Germany with its art department. A boarding school is attached to the school for the students of the art classes, who also take their Abitur due to a special arrangement in art.
