In Les Granges du Galibier, not far from a local cheese shop, a stele was erected in 2011 to commemorate the exact spot where Marco Pantani attacked in the famous fifteenth stage of the 1998 Tour de France. Ullrich was in trouble, the Pirate attacked many kilometers from the finish line in the Deux Alpes and, going on to win, signed one of his greatest feats.
