The imposing burial mound with a height of approx. 13 m and a diameter of 40 m belongs to the category of the so-called princely burial mounds of the late Hallstatt period.

The mound, which was re-examined by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in 1978 after a violent intervention by unauthorized hands, contained two burials, both of which were in the center. From the older grave, the main grave, there was evidence of a 5 x 4.40 m large grave chamber with a stone slab floor, timbered using log construction technology and protected all around by a stone packing. At the top it was secured against grave robbers by a 11 x 7.6 m large, approx. 2.2 m thick stone overpack.

During the excavation, however, it turned out that the burial chamber had been robbed in ancient times and even before the heavily contaminated wooden ceiling, despite the complex precautions. The burial mound is likely to have been of early Celtic origin (approx. 1000 BC). We find numerous evidence of dense settlement e.g. in the barrows in the Stöckach and Lindach forests.

The special importance of Riedenheim is underlined by the "Prince's Grave".
