The Birgel primeval forest with its original forest is a highlight in the Heinsberg district. However, it can also get crowded on the main routes at weekends.

Premium hiking trail Birgeler primeval forest
The start is above Haus Wildenrath. The path follows the nature trail to the edge of the forest, crosses the young Schaagbach. The hikers then go through the Birgeler Forest to the "Birgelener Pützchen", a small pilgrimage chapel. We continue along a Way of the Cross lined with figures of saints. Then there are quite steep climbs to overcome, on which relics of the West Wall can be seen.
The path continues over the old railway embankment of the disused Jülich-Dalheim line to the highest point of the hiking trail. Original mixed and beech forests alternate. Often the paths and paths are framed by almost man-high ferns. Then the hikers reach the romantic Schaagbachtal. The lonely path invites you to enjoy nature. Finally, the path leads back through the broken landscape around Haus Wildenrath.

One of the most beautiful hiking trails over the wonderfully soft forest floor, rarely floated like this!
