Interesting insight into the history of Kiel.
From Wikipedia: In 1927 the future Lord Mayor of Kiel Andreas Gayk - at that time editor of the Schleswig-Holsteinische Volkszeitung - proclaimed the first free German “children's republic” at Gut Seekamp, a large youth camp for 2,300 working-class children from Germany, Denmark, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The first "Seekamp Children's Republic" took place from July 16 to August 12, 1927. Willy Brandt also took part and gave his first radio interview here.
