The visitor tunnel "Schmutzlerzeche" with shelter can be visited on the Goldberg. The 35 meter deep drivable tunnel still shows a gold-bearing quartz vein and the hard manual work of the miner.

The mine was first mentioned by name around 1400. It is believed that more than 500 miners were already working here at that time. The heyday of gold mining here was between 1430 and 1470. The outbreak of the Thirty Years' War brought gold mining to a complete standstill.

In 1662 mining resumed after a long break. This is also thanks to Alexander von Humboldt, who in 1792 got mining going again.

From 1907 onwards, a trade union tried to continue gold mining with modern means. Around 1920, the mining AG Fichtelgold emerged. Assaying of the gold-bearing quartz-antimony-arsenic veins returned 35 grams gold and 22 grams silver per tonne of raw ore. In 1925 mining was stopped for financial reasons.

The Schmutzler mine has been open to visitors since 1985.
