Pigeon tower
The medieval city wall of Kalkar was occupied with about 16 towers until the end of the 16th century. Only a remnant of the former city fortification remains and the pigeon tower, which is still in its original condition up to a height of 4 m, is the only round tower that has survived.
This tower is known as the "Dueffstoern" (thief tower) in 1506 and probably served at least temporarily as a prison.
The name pigeon tower may have changed linguistically over time from Dueff (thief) to Duive (Low German for pigeons).
In the early 18th century, a hexagonal belvedere with a curly slate hood, crowned by a weather vane, was placed on the rest of the tower.
The small living room offered a beautiful, wide view and served temporarily as a studio in Kalkar artists such as Heinrich Nauen, Hermann Teuber and Alfred Sabisch.
