In the north of Rügen, the newly founded "Neuvorpommersch-Rügensche Verein zur Rettungsschiffbrüchiger" built its first rescue station in Putgarten in 1866 and then took over the existing Prussian stations in Glowe, Mukran and Göhren on Rügen as well as Kloster on Hiddensee and the one at Darßer Ort. The association joined the DGzRS in 1868. The old rescue shed in Putgarten still stands today at Dorfstraße 25a and serves as a vehicle hall for the Putgarten volunteer fire department.

The Rans, a Slavic tribe, are the originators of the name Putgarten: Podgarde, which is said to mean "at the foot of the castle." This castle referred to the Jaromarsburg Castle on Cape Arkona, under whose protection this community lived around 800 years ago.
Putgarten today has just under 300 residents and is Rügen's and thus also Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's northernmost resort. But the majority of visitors, who arrive daily by bus and car and are directed to the large parking lot on the southern edge of Putgarten, certainly have more than just relaxation in mind.
Putgarten was and still is of military importance – northern German airspace is monitored from here.
The main attractions are Cape Arkona and the other sights this area has to offer: the lighthouses, the fishing village of Vitt, the Rügenhof Arkona, and the aforementioned Jaromarsburg, or rather the remains of this former Roman temple fortress.
