Really nice to look at this castle.
Unfortunately, the youth hostel was already fully booked ... there you have to register / reserve well in advance, which is rather inconvenient for spontaneous cyclists 😉

The fortress Heldrungen is a fortress used until 1712 with two moats, four Vauban bastions and five roundels and is located in Thuringian Heldrungen, district of An der Schmücke on the southern edge of the Golden Aue southeast of Bad Frankenhausen. The core of the fortress appears as a fortified castle from 1519, while the surrounding ramparts and bastions date back to 1668. The main gate of the fortress is in turn flanked by two mighty round towers (Wikipedia).

This fairytale moated castle dates back to the 12th century and was built in the style of French fortress architecture. It is the only one of its kind that has been preserved in Germany.
