The term macadam describes a special way of building roads, in which three layers, each with different sized, broken and well-compacted aggregates form the road superstructure. This construction was developed by the Scottish inventor John Loudon McAdam at the beginning of the 19th century to improve the durability and durability of the existing roads. Streets paved in this way were described as macadamized.
