The Simmelturm was built in the Middle Ages between 1350 and 1400. As the southernmost part of the medieval city fortifications, it served as a prison in quiet times, but also as a guard to the south. It originally had a different, higher roof; the current one was added in 1761.
It got its name from its round shape (“sinwel” means round).
Various coats of arms are attached to the arched frieze, as well as 16 grotesque heads that were intended to serve as a deterrent.
