    Nature reserve "Tongrube Gochsheim"

District: Gochsheim; Area: 15.0 ha; Prescription date 29.12.1986.

Large parts of the Kraichgau are covered by loess. In the west of Gochsheim, clay and marl layers are stored under the loamy loess cover. For a long time, clay and loam were extracted here. However, because of the numerous limestone inclusions, the mining was no longer profitable and was abandoned in 1976: A few years later, naturalists came across a nationwide amphibious collection on the former clay pit and discovered here one of the largest Kammolch population in Germany. This find drew the attention of conservation organizations to the secondary biotope. Within a short time they presented the nature conservation administration long species lists, with the names of numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. In the clay pit a variety of different habitats was created by the clay mining: Still waters of different sizes alternate with landfills, vegetation-free loess walls and bare soils with grasslands and shrubs. The lakes, ponds and ponds have different siltation stages.

The nature reserve should not be entered. From the path you have two options to go down to the lake. There is also a small bench on the spot next to the viewpoint. From the vantage point you have a great view over the lake in the former clay pit. There you will also find a picnic table. A nice, quiet place.
