The "Green Brink" on Fehmarn has been a protected area since 1938. The area (134 ha) is located on the north coast of Fehmarn, three kilometers west of the Puttgarden ferry station. Today it stretches 2.5 km along the coast to the Niobe monument and the width of the dike crown up to 150 m into the Baltic Sea.

In the NSG "Grüner Brink" you can experience the dynamics of the Baltic Sea up close. With the construction of the state protection dike after a devastating flood disaster in 1872, the current conditions on the north coast changed. The landing of sand and rubble resulted in the formation of spit hooks. Their tips grew inland and sealed off three shallow beach lakes one after the other from the free Baltic Sea.

The dynamic of the Baltic Sea has created the Grüner Brink in around 100 years - a landscape that is subject to constant changes due to floods and ocean currents.
