Hiking

On the way from Kommern to Kommern-Süd lies the “Becherkapelle” in the middle of the fields. It was donated in 1965 by Jakob Eschweiler (1894 - 1965). The studied theologian was director of the Diocesan Museum in Cologne and last lived in Burgfey. The chapel is dedicated to the "Sorrowful Mother" and was designed by the Munich architect Theodor Strauss. The Bauhaus-style building consists of natural stone and concrete.

The small place of worship known as the "Cup Chapel", which was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, is a foundation of Jakob Eschweiler, who comes from Mechernich and was formerly director of the Cologne Diocesan Museum "Kolumba". The construction was (fortunately only partially) based on the style of "Brutalism", which makes the altarpiece with the classic "Pieta" inside even more surprising.
