In the hilly moorland near Schönwald you will find the legendary Blindensee. The lake is at its most beautiful in the morning, when wafts of fog from the high moor bathe the black-looking lake in an eerie atmosphere. In the deep Middle Ages it was believed that all the waters of the world were connected by a subterranean ocean. According to legend, a farmer at Blindensee fell asleep on his ox wagon and went down in the moor together with his wagon. Days later, however, he is said to have reappeared near Kehl am Rhein with his oxen.
