I associate two things with Bad Doberan: The Molli-Bahn and this gigantic former monastery complex with the cathedral as its center. A masterpiece of north German brick Gothic!

The entire facility offers an impressive panorama, just sit on the bench and enjoy the whole thing. We did that when we chose Bad Doberan as the destination of our bike tour. This system can compete with the monastery in Dobbertin, which is now operated by the Diakonie Werk Dobbertin. Also a highlight of the brick Gothic and history of this country.

If you don't want to cycle and happen to be in Kühlungsborn or want to go there, take the Molli-Bahn. There is no better combination of railway romance and north German brick Gothic.

If you are already in Bad Doberan, after the visit you can go to the Kornhaus on the monastery grounds and fortify yourself with delicious cakes. No industrial goods but homemade. Outside tables are also available in good weather.
For families there is a playground in the viewing area.

Doberaner Münster - the high Gothic church of the former Cistersian monastery was built in the late 13th century.
It has a rich medieval interior, some of which are unique. The carvings that have been preserved testify to the high level of craftsmanship of earlier eras.

The monastery complex is a highlight of the north German brick Gothic. The complex includes several buildings, not just the minster. The Cistercian monastery was occupied in 1171 and construction began. The heart of the building is the cathedral, but some buildings are just as old. Some of them are just ruins. Today the granary is used in a variety of ways.
The entire facility is always worth a visit.

The business building is just as old as the Doberan Minster. It was badly damaged by a fire in 1979. Shortly thereafter, the mill received an emergency roof, while the rest of the building is now to be reconstructed.
If you are here at the right time, you can experience the monastery market.
The Kornhaus serves as a café and as a location for a wide variety of cultural events. Right next to it is a nice, large children's playground.

The Bad Doberan monastery, with the cathedral at its central point, has an important supra-regional charisma. A pearl of brick Gothic. The monastery complex with its park is also a place of leisure and relaxation when it gets a little quieter.

Bad Doberan has the stag, the swan and the episcopal crook in the coat of arms.

There is a memorial to the swan to the south-west of the Münster, on the Stülower Bach. The following legend tells what this is all about:

"In 1186 the re-establishment took place at today's location in Doberan. According to legend, Prince Nikolaus von Rostock went hunting here and promised that the new monastery would be built where he would kill the first stag. Nikolaus was lucky enough to hunt. At the same time Time a swan flew out of the swampy lowlands and uttered its call "dobr, dobr", which in Slavic meant "good, good." And so the foundation stone for the abbey was laid on June 25, 1186. The Doberan The coat of arms therefore bears the three distinctive symbols: swan, stag and the bishop's crook. "

It is just as much a part of Bad Doberan as the molly Bahn.
You have to see it. Simply because it's a piece of history!

The high Gothic church of the former Cistercian monastery was built in 1171.
The Minster in Bad Doberan is considered to be the most important medieval building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the best example of the implementation of medieval design in brick and as a building of the highest technical and design perfection.
