Hiking
The Sonnenstein Monument in Herdecke is a historical memorial stone on the wooded summit of the Sonnenstein, a spur of the Ardeygebirge mountains above the Hengsteysee. It lies along popular hiking trails in the Ruhrtal valley and is closely linked to regional history, as the Westphalian gymnastics movement celebrated its annual gymnastics games here in the 19th century before they were moved to the nearby Harkortturm. It is a rather understated historical monument that today primarily serves as a landmark and historical stopover during forest walks.
