Apparently, the Zwetschgenmännla was invented in an apartment at Laufer Schlagturm in the 18th century by a mastermind from Nuremberg who wanted to make children happy, but had nothing but wire and a plum tree in front of the house - so he made little men out of it. The children enjoyed these little men, which is no longer the case today - "Not suitable for consumption" is written on a sign at the Zwetschgenmännle stalls.

The Laufer Schlagturm is a gate tower of the penultimate city fortification of Nuremberg. The name comes from the impact clock located there. It was probably built around 1250, while the two upper floors and the reinforcement pillars were only installed in 1508. In addition to the White Tower and the Guilt Tower, it is one of the few remaining towers of its era in Nuremberg.
