The town square is the old center of Wels. It was built in the 13th century and was expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries by wealthy middle-class families. The craft guilds were also formed, whose buildings are to be found mainly in the Bäckergasse branching off here. Other buildings included noble families, parishes and monasteries.
