The railway ramp on the eastern valley slope is 5.6 kilometers long and overcomes a height difference of 112 meters. The curve radii go down to 278 meters. The section of the route is thus laid out according to the standards for mountain railways. The distance between Geislingen and Amstetten increases with up to 22.5 ‰. It is considered the first mountain crossing of a railway in continental Europe.

Hiking

The construction of the railway around Geislingen caused serious changes to the natural terrain. A few kilometers before the steep ascent of the Steige, the railway line along the Tegelberg between Gingen and Geislingen had to gain enough elevation to reach the level of Geislingen's train station. The horseshoe alone, the three-quarter curve around the present-day Seebach district, required extensive embankments across the marshy valley floor of the Eybtal and in the Katzenloch, which were probably completed in 1846.
