Very great and above all very well preserved castle, especially from the inside.
Admission only with a guide, in German. This costs 8 euros p. P. and takes place at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. We liked it very much, although I'm not very interested in history.

Mighty mountains surround the basin of Sand in Taufers and yet the castle Taufers forms an impressive backdrop. Its architectural history clearly shows that it is an important dynasty castle of the Middle Ages.Taufers Castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century on a promontory that separates the Tauferer from the Ahrntal. The main castle against the mountain of Ahornach in the north (attack side) consists of keep and built residential tower, another Palas (later granary) is located in a sheltered place in the west. The building site, which is defined by the natural terrain, is delimited by an encircling curtain wall on which various residential buildings, mostly developed in the early 16th century, lean against. The fortifications around the gate tower (15th century) are of burgenkundlicher meaning. The main features of the interior are the Gothic frescoes of the chapel with a rare Deesis and the many wood-paneled and comfortably furnished rooms. In the 19th and 20th

Of the 64 rooms of the castle, about two dozen are paneled and can be visited as part of a guided tour. Of outstanding value are the frescoes from the school of Friedrich Pacher in the castle chapel, at whose altar a replica of a beautiful Romanesque crucifix can be seen. Of particular interest are the prince rooms, the cozy sleeping chambers with their canopy-like beds, the large library with its tiled fireplace, the armory, the courtroom, the dungeon and the torture chamber. Also of cultural historical importance are the portraits in the so-called hospital room of the Knights' Hall, which show offspring of Tyrolean noble families of a nobility school run by Beatrix von Fieger in the years 1558-1567.

Taufers Castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century on a rocky outcrop that separates the Tauferer and Ahrntal valleys. The main castle against the mountain of Ahornach in the north (attack side) consists of keep and attached residential tower, another palas (later grain box) is located in a protected place in the west. The site specified by the natural site is bordered by a circumferential ring wall, to which various residential buildings, mostly built in the early 16th century, are based. The weirs around the gate tower (15th century) are of importance to castles.
