It is unknown whether the first ore discoveries were made on the staircase by chance or deliberate excavations, but thanks to the many archaeological finds, the time can be pinpointed precisely. In 1220 the first miners began to dig for ore on the hill between the Zschopau and Sachsenburg. Mostly lead gloss with a modest amount of silver was found. The entire area of the former mountain town of Blyberge covers more than 12 hectares. Around 180 pings, floor plans and the former city wall can still be seen today. Due to this large area, it is assumed that this was more of a city with around 1500 inhabitants. Not only did the miners and their families settle here, but also service workers and other trades. Excavation finds revealed that a kind of handicraft settlement was formed a bit away from the miners' settlement.

The desert medieval town of Blyberg was discovered in the 1970s. House foundations, ovens and old shaft systems came to light. The settlement with a recognizable rampart was built around 1270. It is believed that around 2000 people lived in the 12 hectare city. the association "Mittelalterliche Bergstadt Bleiberg e.V." has reconstructed the houses of this city and today provides a glimpse into the living and living conditions of the miners and craftsmen of that time. An audio guide gives you more information about each property.
