The Vorderburg was the main castle of Schlitz and was probably built in the 13th century at the latest in the northwestern part of the medieval Schlitz. Only the lower part of the residential tower-like, formerly Romanesque keep, the foundations of which date from before 1181, remains of the castle. The older part is on the upper gate side. The eastern three-storey palace building flanking the tower was rebuilt and added in the form we know today at the instigation of Junker Johann Eustach von Schlitz in 1565, as was probably the Welsche dome of the tower. The lords of Schlitz, mentioned in a document since 819 (Gerlacus de Slitese), came to the Fulda fief of the city in 1116, after they had previously belonged to the Counts of Ziegenhain.
