The ascent and descent are recommended and definitely worth it. A fantastic view will reward you. The view into the Lautertal and towards the Alps is very beautiful. It is also a good place to take a short snack break before heading back to Hayingen. There are tables and benches on the tower.

      Castle ruin Wartstein

In the high Middle Ages the southern Alb was around the Lautertal borderland between Staufern and Welfen. The rich barons of Gundelfingen were attached to the Hohenstaufen; farther south, the Welfs had a castle Wartstein (castle St. Ruprecht) and probably the corresponding old counts rights. Between Emperor Barbarossa and the Guelph Henry the Lion, it finally came to a decisive confrontation, which was subject to the Welfs. Around 1180 Barbarossa renewed the county of Wartstein.
After 1208 Count von Wartstein built his new castle, today's Wartstein, one of the most daring rock castles in the Lautertal, from which only the shield wall has survived. The mighty shield wall has a viewing platform accessible via spiral staircase.
