Freudenburg (Freudenberg Castle)

Opposite the Bassumer Kanonissenstift opposite is Freudenberg Castle, the seat of the clerks for a long time, after which the district court was located. Today the castle is a European seminar and conference center of the VHS in the district of Diepholz.

Beautiful and well-kept castle complex from the Middle Ages.
Events such as a medieval market, open-air concerts, etc. take place regularly in the park (veranstaltungen-bassum.de/).

The remaining official buildings of the castle ensemble are within the historical fortifications (wall and moat) of the former Freudenberg Castle, which was built around 1290 as a bailiwick fortress of the Counts of Oldenburg-Bruchhausen next to the noble Bassum convent (founded around 860) and later in the Possessed by various sovereigns. The brick Gothic office - the dungeon - from the 14th century is still preserved from the medieval fortress to the east of the courtyard. The cultural and local history association has set up a small museum here. Today the Freudenburg serves as a cultural and events venue with concerts and theater performances on the large open-air stage.
