From 1831, Germany's oldest still active railway line led from (Essen-)Byfang to (Velbert-)Nierenhof through the Deilbach valley. The route was initially operated by horses and is now used by the S-Bahn. From 1844 this route was extended and in 1847 - together with the station in Neviges - opened between (Essen-)Überruhr and (Wuppertal)-Vohwinkel as the steam-powered Steele-Vohwinkler railway.
