Together with the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel-Essen-Überruhr railway, the station was opened north of the center of the then independent municipality of Neviges on December 1, 1847 by the Prince Wilhelm Railway Company at 12.8 kilometers.

Cycling

From 1831, Germany's oldest still active railway line led from (Essen-)Byfang to (Velbert-)Nierenhof through the Deilbach valley. The route was initially operated by horses and is now used by the S-Bahn. From 1844 this route was extended and in 1847 - together with the station in Neviges - opened between (Essen-)Überruhr and (Wuppertal)-Vohwinkel as the steam-powered Steele-Vohwinkler railway.
