The name Contrescarpe is derived from Latin, which refers to an outer wall or embankment of a main moat of a fortress. Historically, Bremen's old town was protected on the land side by a wall, and still secured with a wall ditch, precisely this Contrescarpe (than opposite the wall).
This was expanded at the beginning of the 16th century.
The Bremen ramparts connected here, which emerged from the fortifications of the 17th century, were built in the early 19th century, which also brought about a change in the Contrescarpe street.
Today we are able to fully enjoy the leisure and recreational value on the Wall and on the Contrescarpe with its various sights along the way. Accordingly, the Contrescarpe, which can be walked on and driven on from both sides, is a real highlight, a feast for the eyes and a place to take a deep breath.

The moat or moat is the remainder of the old fortifications around the old Bremen. Originally, they ran on both sides of the Weser as Rundum fortification. On the left side of the Weser, however, only a few park remnants are present.

The Bremer Wallanlagen were part of the Bremen city fortification and emerged from the fortifications built to the 17th century and are now a popular park on the edge of Bremen's Old Town. They are not only Bremen's oldest, but also the first public park in Germany, which was realized by a bourgeois people's representative.
