Schloss Traunsee was built in 1872-75 in the style of the French Neo-Renaissance by Duke Philipp of Württemberg and his wife. That is why it is popularly called "Schloss Württemberg". It is considered the most important building of historicism in the Salzkammergut. The family and their five children lived in the castle only in summer.

After a checkered history (rest home, refugee camp, military hospital, ...) the castle finally became the property of the Republic of Austria in 1975 and today houses the boarding school and classes of the Federal Real High School Schloss Traunsee as well as the Upper Austria. Talent academy for highly gifted children.
