The origins of the Alexius Chapel go back to the time of Bishop Meinwerk. When Meinwerk was in Rome in 1014 with Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde, he suffered from a plague-like illness. Meinwerk vowed to have a chapel built for Saint Alexius after returning safely to his diocese. This first building was probably built in 1017. From 1670 to 1673, the Alexius Chapel was rebuilt based on the Dutch model. The decorative alternation of sandstone and brick as well as the artistic iron grilles are remarkable.
