        The tower was built in 1328 as a signal and observation tower and was originally called the "High Tower". It was part of the city's outer fortification ring.
         
        Because of its shape, it later got the name Buttenturm, because it reminds of a wine butt (a container for the harvest, which is carried on the back). The unusual shape can be seen well in the photo below right.
         
        In the past, you could only enter the tower from the city side. The current access was built later. Until 1936 the tower was privately owned for several decades and was misused as a "tea room".
