The foundation of a stone column (“crucible stone”) still poses some puzzles. It is believed that there was a customs rule here where a toll was previously charged. It could also have been a wayside shrine with a figure of a saint. Likewise, there are only speculations about the grinding troughs in the inch-hole stone.
