In the town of Gelnhausen, the Lower Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic sandstone) overlies the clay-rich layers of the Zechstein period, a marine deposit locally known as "Bröckelschiefer" (crumbly slate), now considered part of the Fulda Formation.

The springs in the town emerge at the boundary between the Bröckelschiefer and the Buntsandstein.

Many of Gelnhausen's house wells are also located in the Bröckelschiefer.
