In the urban area of Gelnhausen, the Lower Buntsandstein overlays the clay-rich layers of the Zechstein Age, a sea deposit that is locally referred to as "Bröckelschiefer" (today regarded as the Fulda Formation).
The springs emerge in the city area at the border between crumbling slate and red sandstone.
The many Gelnhausen fountains are also in the crumbling slate.
