      The witch tower
The late medieval fortification tower was originally used as an ammunition store and was popularly renamed from "Fratzenstein" to "Hexenturm" because it served as a prison tower during the time of the witch trials. As was customary at the time, the round floor plan was intended to divert storeys. Today a collection of reconstructed torture instruments as well as a documentation about the witch hunt can be viewed. During the time of the witch hunt, which had their wedding in the second half of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century, over 50 women, men and children were executed as witches and wizards.

The witch tower has been preserved in its original state. It is one of the most interesting towers of the Gelnhausen city fortifications. Due to its construction, its diameter of nine meters and its enormous wall thickness of 2.80 meters, it was an imposing artillery bulwark. The total height is 24 meters. The entrance door is 4 meters above ground level and can be reached via a small wooden staircase from the battlements passing by. The loopholes in the battlements, so-called window notches, were created by roofing the formerly open battlements. The entrance now leading to the vaulted basement is not from the time the tower was built, but was only broken at the end of the 19th century when this room was used privately as a cellar.

In Gelnhausen there are still some well-preserved towers from a bygone era, such as this witch tower.
