The Toppler Castle was the retreat of the great Mayor of Rothenburg, Heinrich Toppler, who directed Rothenburg's fortunes at the end of the 14th century. Through his excellent relationships in the highest circles of imperial politics, he was able to achieve great advantages for Rothenburg. He had a particularly close relationship with the Roman-German King Wenceslas, whom he is said to have housed several times here in the Topplerschlösschen.
