Hohenfels Castle is particularly notable for its semi-troglodyte section, which included a defensive system integrated into the sandstone rock in which it was built.

From Dambach, take Rue du Lion straight through the town and then up the hill to the Hohenfels ruins, also known as Chateau Dambach.

After the tour, you can return the same way or, as I did, take an easy circular route back to Dambach.

You can see: Remains of the west wall of the three-story palace, a cistern, and chambers carved into the rock.

I took an Alsatian castle tour in 2017.

This short tour should be combined with a visit to one or more of the following castle ruins:
Wachtfelsen and Klein-Arnsberg ruins
Alt-Windstein and Neu-Windstein ruins
Luetzelhardt ruins
Chateau Schoeneck and Chateau Wineck
This way, you can comfortably visit several castle ruins in one day.
