Historic lock at the confluence of the Rhône-Rhine Canal with the Doubs, just next to the pretty little village of Dampierre, with a picnic site. It is a French canal that connects the Saône, a navigable tributary of the Rhône, to the Rhine, through the Doubs valley and its extension in Upper Alsace to Niffer on the Rhine, another extension joining Strasbourg by the canalization of the Ill .
It is designed as a necessary link to connect the seaports of northern Europe with those of the Mediterranean by creating a Rotterdam-Marseille river link via Germany. The company managing it was among the first listed on the Paris Stock Exchange.
