The 17th century Fort de Sao Sebastiao in Porto Pim once helped to protect Horta from pirate attacks that attempted to intercept ships crossing the Atlantic. At that time, the port of Porto Pim could accommodate around 400 ships at peak times. The current port has meanwhile been moved to the other side of Horta.
