Someone started it, the origin is in the dark, but it has become a tradition that yachts passing by leave a sign on the harbor wall in the form of a painting on their way across the Atlantic. It is supposed to ensure your safe journey home. The dedication with which the crews immortalize their more or less artistic paintings in the narrow space between all the many existing paintings is impressive. Well, there is a limit to eternity, at least until wind, weather and the oceanic climate don't let it fade.

This tradition has now been taken forward and you can see these paintings in other marinas like Ponta Delgada on São Miguel or Vila do Porto on Santa Maria as well. Nice to look at during a tour.
