After the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire, Orscholz was ceded to Prussia. The place name is derived from the "Orkelsfelsen" located in Orscholz.

The oldest documented name "Orkelsvels" is most likely due to the construction of a castle on a rocky hill that is still called "Orkelsfelsen" today. A Frank named Orko is said to have owned the area ("Orko's Rock") and built this castle there.
